Some of the best short stories I have ever read

A superb collection of lovely, amusing stories about the friendly rivlaries between a Catholic priest and a Communist mayor. I used to enjoy them as bedtime stories as a child - some of the language was beyond me, but the story and humour wasn't. I enjoy them just as much today. The stories are very short (a few pages), and very well told. This really is one that any story-lover should try.

Buyer beware - set your expectations!

There is no doubt that the Don Camillo stories are endearing, poignant, sometimes humorous and sometimes spiritual. They are, in a word, 'comforting'.Be aware though, based on the copy I received, that this is not the Companion Edition and it contains just over 500 pages, not the number advertised! It therefore has fewer stories, although it does have about 70. We have a copy of the original Companion Edition and bought this to replace what is now a very worn, very well read copy. The cover is that of the paperback, advertised elsewhere, The Don Camillo Omnibus having a predominantly white background with a centred building against a blue sky.The 1* reviewer of 'another' version on Amazon The Don Camillo Omnibus: The Little World of Don Camillo, Don Camillo and the Prodigal Son, Don Camillo's Dilemma refers to typo's in that version, they are also in this book, suggesting they are originated from the same source. Also irritating are the number of hyphenated words at the end of lines - confirming that this is not a genuine reprint but a 'custom print' to fulfil an order - hence the inflated price.That said, if you view this as AN omnibus, rather than THE omnibus, your expectations may be different to mine. I did, however, expect it was going to be a 'print to order' copy so, on the positive side the book feels good in the hand - it is brand new with a solid, laminated cover. I assume the paper is of reasonable quality, not being sure if it's acid free or not, so can't predict how long it will last - ours will be read often and over many years. Our original copy, was bought 2nd hand over 30yrs ago!I ordered this book on the 14th Dec 2010, it appears to have been printed on the 16th, despatched on the 20th and was delivered on the 30th. So, given the prevailing weather conditions, consequential postal delays and the fact it had to printed and bound, the timeframe was acceptable.So, expect a good compendium of Don Camillo stories, rather than the Companion Edition Omnibus, printed to order onto different sized paper to the original, with different pagination, which hasn't been proof read, with maybe 20 fewer stories and you'll be pleased with your purchase and delighted by the read! Remember, this is an 'out of print' title, were it not for the development of 'custom print' technologies finding a good copy of this book would be well nigh impossible :-)
